You have to type in the exact format number or else it won't work. Look at your configuration as well. Good luck on setting up but once it work it works well. If you are like me and live in an area that doesn't have Wi-Fi or any high speed intranet available this may be what you need.
One thing to remember if you have no high speed hook up available, this is only for dial up and the speed is slow due to the dial up, not the modem. It solved my problem and does the job. I've been using Linux since The first thing one always does when they begin to use Linux is get an external modem.
The first one I ever got was a USRobotics. Quite expensive and it worked right out of the box. Unfortunately it only lasted about 4 months! I got another one, the exact same model I went on a search for external modems and ended up with a ZOOM external modem.
The only thing that's gone wrong with it is the power button broke and won't stay pushed 'on', so I taped it pushed in and it still works. I wasn't sure what to expect with a USB modem and Linux, but got this one since it was fairly cheap.
I plugged it in, turned on the system, looked for the new modem and my Linux found it without a hitch. I didn't have to add drivers or anything! I'm using openSUSE I'm using the modem as I type, on my Linux.
As far as I'm concerned, ZOOM is tops out there for these kinds of things and again, I couldn't be happier with their products. One person found this helpful. I purchased this to have a backup for my Verizon DSL, which seems to go out for a few days every month. I had purchased two other modems both from other sellers and more expensive and could not get them to work with Windows This one worked great! Very easy to set-up just follow the prompts.
Didn't have to go to websites looking for updated drivers like I did with the other two and works great with Windows From start to finish it took about 20 minutes to have it up and running.
